DIY Teach Your Child How to Swim Skill #2: Blow Bubbles

Skill #2: Blow Bubbles

Goal: Inhale the air and exhale into the water.

Remember to continue practicing Skill #1: Get Your Face Wet every time you give your child a bath or are in the pool with him. Learning how to swim is a lifelong process. You are helping your child foster a healthy relationship with water, which will benefit him positively for the rest of his life.

Do not ‘protect’ anyone's face from the water. It's just water. That said,  it’s best to teach your child in a controlled, safe environment. The bath is the perfect place to start.

How to Blow Bubbles in the Water

  • Start by gently blowing on each other’s fingers, like blowing out a birthday candle or blowing on hot food.

  • Blow bubbles with a soap wand.

  • Next, inhale out of the water, and then exhale the breath into the water to create bubbles.

Show your children these skills. Pour water on your head. Put your face in the water. Blow bubbles. Laugh. Have fun! It's just water. Make the experience safe, comfortable and fun. The next blog post in this series will cover DIY Teach Your Child How to Swim Skill #3: Front Float. Please share this with any parents, grandparents or caregivers that work with children and can benefit from this educational information.  It could save a child's life.
